Wage Subsidy Scheme – Barnsley

The Wage Subsidy Scheme from Barnsley Council helps small and medium-sized businesses reduce the cost of recruiting new staff while supporting local people into sustainable employment. The scheme is part of the Pathways to Work programme and is funded by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.

Eligible employers can receive up to 12 weeks of wage subsidy at National Minimum Wage for recruiting a new employee aged 16 to 30. Roles can be full-time or part-time but must be expected to last six months or more. To qualify, businesses must have fewer than 100 employees and be based in Barnsley or have a workplace within South Yorkshire.

In addition to financial support, employers benefit from ongoing guidance from the Pathways to Work team, including help with recruitment and in-work support for the employee to encourage retention and progression. This makes the scheme particularly suitable for businesses looking to grow their workforce while contributing to inclusive economic development.

Funding is limited and subject to availability, so early applications are encouraged. Employers should ensure they meet all eligibility criteria and have the required documentation in place before applying. Deadlines may change depending on demand, and places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
