South Yorkshire Rural Crime Initiative

The South Yorkshire Rural Crime Initiative was launched in March 2026 to help protect rural communities and provide practical support to residents, farmers and businesses across South Yorkshire. Developed in partnership with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and delivered alongside South Yorkshire Police, the initiative recognises the significant impact rural and wildlife crime can have on local communities and livelihoods.

Through this initiative, partners are increasing investment and coordination to reduce rural crime, tackle the fear of crime and bring offenders to justice. The programme focuses on prevention, community engagement and targeted enforcement to help keep rural areas safe.

As part of the initiative, rural residents and businesses can apply for financial support to improve security and reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime. Funding contributions ranging from £500 to £2,000 are available to help purchase and install crime prevention measures such as CCTV systems, security lighting, enhanced signage, drones and other target-hardening equipment. The level of support offered will depend on factors including previous incidents of crime and the assessed risk to the property.

The initiative also includes increased engagement with rural communities, joint operations with partner agencies and environmental improvements to strengthen vulnerable locations and support long-term rural safety.
