IP Advance: Protecting Innovation and Growth

The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has launched IP Advance, a new programme designed to help innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) make better use of their intellectual property (IP) assets. The scheme recognises that intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, registered designs and copyright, can play a vital role in business growth, competitiveness and long-term success.

IP Advance provides specialist advice and support to help businesses identify, understand and maximise the value of their IP. Participants can receive guidance on developing an effective IP strategy aligned with their commercial objectives, helping them to protect innovations, strengthen their market position and create opportunities for future growth.

As part of the programme, eligible businesses can access an IP Audit, which offers tailored recommendations from an intellectual property professional. The IPO contributes £2,250 (including VAT) towards the cost of the audit, with participating businesses providing a contribution of £750.

The scheme is not delivered directly by the Intellectual Property Office. In England, applications are managed through Innovate UK Business Growth, one of the IPO’s regional delivery partners, which works with businesses to assess eligibility and provide access to support.

IP Advance is aimed at trading businesses with fewer than 250 employees where intellectual property is, or is expected to become, a key part of their growth plans. It is particularly relevant for innovative companies developing new products, services, technologies, brands or creative content and looking to strengthen their approach to protecting and exploiting valuable intellectual assets.

For growing businesses, the programme offers an opportunity to build a stronger understanding of IP and develop a strategic framework for future innovation and commercial success.
