Barnsley businesses with fewer than 250 employees can now access a comprehensive package of fully funded health and wellbeing support through the Be Well @ Work SME+ programme. Designed to help employers improve workforce wellbeing, productivity and staff retention, the programme offers a range of practical services and training opportunities at no cost to participating businesses.
The SME+ offer includes both physical and mental health support for employees. Businesses can access a 12-week health and wellbeing programme featuring gym membership, swimming, fitness classes and personalised support from health professionals. Additional support is available through occupational physiotherapy, workstation assessments and practical interventions designed to reduce workplace injuries, improve comfort and help employees remain healthy and productive.
Mental wellbeing is another key focus of the programme. Employees experiencing health or wellbeing challenges can access one-to-one support sessions, helping individuals manage issues such as stress, anxiety and low wellbeing before they impact attendance or performance. The programme aims to improve staff retention, reduce sickness absence and create healthier workplaces across Barnsley.
Alongside individual support, employers can benefit from a wide range of free training courses delivered throughout 2026 and 2027. Topics include mental health awareness, mental health training for managers, wellbeing and resilience, neurodiversity awareness, supporting women’s health at work, supporting men’s health, and building psychologically safe and healthy team cultures. These sessions are designed to help managers create supportive working environments while equipping employees with practical tools to improve wellbeing.
The programme is open to SMEs across Barnsley and provides an excellent opportunity for businesses to invest in their workforce without additional cost. With growing recognition of the link between employee wellbeing, productivity and business success, Be Well @ Work SME+ offers valuable support for organisations looking to strengthen workforce resilience, reduce absence and build a healthier workplace culture.
