The Barnsley AI Upskilling Fund is a new grant programme designed to help businesses, workers and communities develop the skills needed to make effective use of artificial intelligence. As part of the Government’s wider Barnsley Tech Town initiative, the fund aims to support innovative training projects that increase workforce capability, improve productivity and encourage the practical adoption of AI across a range of sectors.
Many organisations recognise the potential benefits of AI but face barriers such as training costs, limited expertise and a lack of tailored support. The fund has been created to address these challenges by supporting the development and delivery of targeted AI skills programmes that help organisations and individuals gain the confidence and knowledge needed to adopt AI successfully. A particular focus is placed on sectors where productivity gains could be significant, but where workforce skills gaps currently limit progress.
The programme is aimed at training providers, colleges, charities, technology companies, employers and other organisations capable of delivering AI upskilling projects within Barnsley. Proposals should demonstrate how they will help local businesses and residents develop practical AI skills, with a focus on measurable outcomes and long-term impact. Priority groups include SMEs, manufacturing businesses, older residents, young people entering employment and other groups that may be at risk of being left behind by technological change.
A total of £800,000 is available through this competitive funding programme. Successful projects must not only deliver benefits within Barnsley but also demonstrate the potential to be replicated elsewhere in the UK, helping to inform future national AI skills policy and workforce development initiatives.
Applications opened on 15 July 2026 and close on 12 August 2026. This opportunity is particularly suitable for organisations with innovative ideas for AI training that can improve business productivity, support workforce development and contribute to long-term economic growth.
