This funding programme provides £100,000 to £250,000 grants to support the development of commercial, entertainment‑focused video games with strong market potential. It is aimed at building financially sustainable UK‑based games studios while growing PAYE employment.
Eligible applicant companies must be UK‑registered SMEs with PAYE employees working in games development in the UK. Ownership structures must be clearly defined, with UK‑based founder‑directors holding significant shareholdings. Businesses should be financially stable, not facing acute working‑capital risks, and founders must clearly articulate their business structure and long‑term growth strategy. While established studios are preferred, newer companies may be considered where founders have strong track records and secured near‑term publishing opportunities. Previous UKGTF recipients must demonstrate clear progress since earlier funding.
Development approach funding should primarily support employed staff, with limited contracting. Applicants must explain where and how development will take place in the UK, demonstrate access to talent, and show how the approach supports collaboration, learning and networking. Positive impacts on under‑representation and commitments to improving diversity are strongly encouraged.
Projects must have an existing prototype, with IP owned or appropriately licensed by the applicant, and be a core focus of the studio’s development portfolio. Projects must be commercial games for entertainment, capable of securing a large audience, and free from gambling elements or reputational risks. Funding can cover eligible staff and contractor development costs only.
Leverage is essential: total project costs must be at least double the grant requested, with strong additionality demonstrated. At least 30% of the grant is held back until leverage is formally secured, preferably through private investment such as publisher advances, within the same financial year.
