The MCS Foundation is supporting the transition to a carbon‑free, future‑proofed heating system for UK homes by helping develop and roll out the Low Carbon Heating Technician Apprenticeship, the UK’s first dedicated heat pump apprenticeship. As this apprenticeship is new, additional assistance is being offered to help training providers, employers, and prospective apprentices prepare for and successfully begin the programme.
To encourage early uptake, the Foundation is offering two types of grants. Training providers that commit to delivering the Low Carbon Heating Technician Apprenticeship in 2025 or 2026 can apply for up to £10,000 in funding. This support can be used to strengthen apprenticeship delivery, such as purchasing classroom equipment, enhancing practical training resources, or upskilling staff to teach the programme effectively.
Employers willing to take on an apprentice are also eligible for financial support. They can apply for up to £2,000 per apprentice, for a maximum of three apprentices, to help cover associated employment or training costs. This employer funding is released once the apprentice has completed six months of employment, ensuring stability and commitment on both sides.
All funding is allocated on a first‑come, first‑served basis until the full budget has been distributed, encouraging early applications from organisations ready to engage with low‑carbon heating technologies. By backing both providers and employers, the MCS Foundation aims to accelerate the availability of skilled low‑carbon heating technicians and support the UK’s wider transition to sustainable home heating.
