The Made Smarter Digital Internship Programme helps small and medium-sized manufacturers adopt new technologies by matching them with digitally skilled students and recent graduates. The programme provides a funded Digital Intern who can support businesses in developing digital strategies, introducing new tools and integrating technology into everyday operations. This practical support is aimed at increasing productivity, reducing manual processes, improving efficiency and helping manufacturers identify long-term digital opportunities.
Internships typically run for 300 hours (or 480 hours in the Yorkshire & Humber region) and can be completed full‑time, part‑time or flexibly according to the needs of the project. The intern’s cost is fully funded by Made Smarter, with employers paying the intern directly and receiving reimbursement afterwards. This reduces financial risk and makes it easier for manufacturers to trial and implement digital solutions.
Digital Interns bring expertise in areas such as data analytics, robotics, engineering, automation, digital design and software implementation. They may work on projects such as building digital roadmaps, introducing automation tools, improving data systems, or supporting the development of new digital processes.
Alongside immediate project benefits, the programme strengthens long-term digital capability within the business by supporting staff development and building a future talent pipeline. It offers manufacturers a low‑risk, high‑impact way to accelerate digital transformation and embed new skills across the organisation.
